The reader of this book shall experience a pleasant surprise discovering that Agio Galas, that small and remote village of NW Chios, has been hiding treasures of tremendous value indeed. Besides being the most ancient inhabited place of the island as well as one of its oldest medieval settlements, it has been naturally gifted with one of the most interesting caves in Greek territory, which, in addition to that, has been a fund of extremely rich and historically important findings, not only archaeological but also palaentological ones.
Furthermore, the village is adorned with the exquisitely crafted Byzantine church of Panagia– founded inside the cave– , the smaller Byzantine church of Agia Anna also founded inside the cave with the oldest surviving murals in the island, and the church of Agios Thaleleos, one of the rarest of that name in Greece. Also, five out of ten churches in this village are adorned with wood-carved icon screens of excellent craftsmanship, one of which, besides being extremely elegant, is the most ancient dated screen in Chios, while the other one rates among the masterpieces of wood-carving worldwide. All of the above, combined with other parti-cular or unique traits of Agio Galas, make it a remarkable monument of Nature, History and Art.
